Today, I’m comparing three Sony film simulations you’ll want to check out: Kodak Portra 800, Kodak Vision 200T, and the newest addition — Ayon 200.

Ayon 200 isn't based on any real film — it's just my creative take, made after my own preference.

Each of these recipes stands out & has such a distinct flair. You're sure to find one that will suit your creative needs. Which one's calling your name?

Characteristics

Kodak Portra 800 Film Simulation - The Smooth Operator

Kodak Portra 800 is renowned for its buttery soft contrast and high dynamic range, making it great for portraits, weddings, beauty shots — or pretty much anything where you want subtle, gorgeous tones. Minimal editing needed, mostly for contrast.

Kodak Vision 200T - Asteroid City look

Next up is Kodak Vision 200T. This one renders Wes Anderson's Asteroid City look pretty well. And it offers amazing colors straight out of camera without the hassle of color grading, which makes the process much more enjoyable. You might have to adjust exposure or contrast, but that's pretty much it.

No wonder it has become a top choice! It’s great if you want cinematic, artsy shots without extra fuss.

Ayon 200 - Bold & Experimental

The newest member of the lineup, Ayon 200, is all about making a visual impact. Ayon 200 is characterized by high contrast and a monochromatic look - it emphasizes yellows, and occasionally accentuates green skies and deep reds.

This distinctive look brings depth to everyday scenes, perfect for sparking creativity when you're after something bold and different. I honestly couldn't stop shooting with it in Italy. Ayon 200 is an exciting choice for those looking for something completely new to pump your creativity.

So how do these compare in terms of contrast, color, and hues?

When you compare these three simulations, the differences in contrast, color, and hues become clear. Kodak Portra 800 has a soft contrast similar to Kodak Vision 200T, but with warmer tones filled with a magenta subtle cast. Kodak Vision 200T, on the other hand, keeps skin tones warm and skies with a teal tint, giving it that cinematic feel.

Ayon 200, however, takes a sharp turn with its high contrast and heavy yellow focus. It turns skies green and deepens reds, offering a striking, almost monochromatic look that makes everyday scenes pop.

Wrap up

Each of these film simulations brings something unique to the table.

Kodak Portra 800 is all about natural, smooth tones, making it perfect for everyday shots and portraits. Kodak Vision 200T offers a bold, artistic vibe for those looking for a bit of flair. Ayon 200, on the other hand, adds drama and depth, turning regular scenes into something unforgettable.

Ultimately, the right choice depends on what you’re after. If you want soft elegance, go for Portra 800. If you're after something with cinematic flair, Vision 200T is the way to go. And for a dramatic twist, Ayon 200’s the perfect fit. No matter what, you'll get stunning results right from the camera, without the need of extensive color grading.
