Kodak Ultra Max 400 one of the best choices if you want a natural, down to earth look but with a slight touch of a filmic look.

If I had to describe this recipe in a few words, I'd say it's simple, versatile, natural and charming.

Kodak Ultra Max 400 Film Characteristics

Kodak UltraMax 400 is a daylight, flexible, consumer-grade film that first hit the shelves in 2007, replacing Kodak Gold 400.

It delivers a balanced look with rich, natural colors and just a touch of warmth. The colors feel true-to-life—saturated but not over the top. It’s the kind of film that instantly brings back that early-2000s vibe—at least for me, it feels like childhood in a roll.

UltraMax 400 is known for being an all-rounder, but despite its consumer label, it now sells for around €11–15 per roll. That can end up being quite expensive when you want to shoot multiple rolls on vacation, for instance.

As you'll see in the JPEG samples below - the Ultra Max 400 film simulation strikes a balance. It's got a slightly desaturated yet warm look that works in so many different scenes. Skin tones come out beautifully and natural, with a slight shift towards pink.

If you lean towards a cooler look, you should give the Fuji Pro 400H recipe a try - this one leans cooler, just as many of Fuji's film stocks do.

When you compare Kodak Ultra Max 400 to to Kodak Gold V1 & V2 - you'll see that this one's the neutral one out of the bunch. And that's what makes it so versatile - you can use it for portraits, landscape, street photography, and more.

But take a look for yourself!
