11 Custom Nikon Picture Control Film Presets

Format your SD card in-camera first (this ensures the folder structure is recognized). 
Plug your SD card into your computer.
Create a folder named NIKON.
Inside that folder, create another one named CUSTOMPC.
Drop the .NP3 files in there.
Pop the card back in, Press the MENU button.
Open the `Shooting` menu, go to your camera’s Manage Picture Control menu, and select Load/Save, then Copy to Camera. Select a profile and click it.
Save.
Load that camera profile.
 

Note: The golden rule here is to format your memory card with a compatible camera before importing the .np3 files, or the camera won’t recognize the  /NIKON/CUSTOMPC folder structure.

Nikon NP3 files can be edited in-camera on compatible Z cameras (Z6III, Zf, Z5II, Z50II, ZR), but only a few parameters can be tweaked: Picture Control intensity and overall tone parameters (sharpening, contrast, brightness, saturation, clarity, and hue). 

The presets require Nikon’s latest Flexible Color architecture. Nikon’s Flexible Custom Picture Controls work with Nikon Z6III, Z8, Z9, Zf, Z5II, Z50II, and Zr cameras. This is because I’ve created the presets with NX studio’s Creative Picture Control, which allows more granular control over the preset creation process, but makes them incompatible with other cameras. 
 

Yes, you can apply the flexible picture control presets in-real time on JPEGs and Videos, but only on Nikon Z6III, Z8, Z9, Zf, Z5II, Z50II, and Zr cameras cameras with the latest update that support Flexible Picture Controls. For videos, it only works on Rec709 formats. 

Yes, the Picture Controls do apply to RAW stills if you use NX Studio. The RAW files embed a preview of the preset with the settings in the NX Studio software that you can choose to keep or start from scratch. But as far as I know, this is only available in Nikon’s proprietary software, not in Lightroom or Capture One. 

Yep, Nikon does allow you to create in-camare film simulations, through the custom Picture Control presets. These are in-camera recipes or profiles, but you create them on a desktop and then upload them to your Nikon via SD Card or Nikon’s Imagining Cloud. The NP3 ones offer granular control over the look of your presets, through NX Studio’s features: specifically the Color Blender and Color Grading tools.

Nikon Picture Control presets are in-camera "recipes" that tell your camera’s processor how to interpret color, contrast, and light in real-time. Much like Fujifilm’s famous simulations, these presets allow you to achieve a specific Nikon Picture Control film look—like Kodak Portra or Fuji Astia—directly on your JPEGs and video files without needing to edit a RAW file later.

No, Nikon Picture Control presets do not contain or save White Balance (WB) settings. This has to be either set as AWB, 5500K or manually set accordingly to the scene.
